PNGRFU was established in 1962 and over that time has enjoyed a degree of success. PNG began playing international rugby in 1966 and the national team is commonly known as the "Puk- Puk's". We are yet to qualify for a Rugby World Cup but are currently ranked 47th in the world.
Papua New Guinea is represented on the international rugby stage by Men, Women's and U19's teams. Our men have competed well in 15's and 7's in recent seasons. We are current Oceania Cup Champions and have been since its inception in 2007. The team has competed in the IRB World Sevens Series and in regional competitions that feed into the series. The last IRB Sevens event that PNG took part in was the 2011 Gold Coast leg of the IRB Sevens. The team also enjoyed success at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where they were the Bowl winners.
The National Women's team was established in 2007, and, in a relatively short space of time, has also enjoyed significant success. Our Women are the current Asia Pacific Women's Sevens Champions after defeating China at the 2011 tournament.
The game is played throughout the country and presently there are thirteen provinces actively running 15's and/or 7's competitions. There is a need to increase these competitions to provide more for age grade players and women throughout PNG.
